What do you want from your body?
Whatever it is, Functional Training can make it happen

Whether or not you actually get what you want from your body depends in part on your goals (are they realistic?) and in part on your particular body (its age, special conditions and/or genetic make-up, for example). But your chance of getting what you want is a lot better with functional training from a qualified professional than by going to a gym and trying to “figure it out” on your own.

While almost everyone these days wants to shed a few pounds (or more), my clients also have practical goals for healthy living – all of which can be addressed with functional exercises. Their goals range from wanting to get healthier and to have more energy for the things they love, to preparing for an active vacation. Most simply want to feel their best by getting stronger and more fit.

Sit much?
The human body is designed to move, not to sit at a desk, in a car or on a couch.  With so much of our lives requiring (or accommodating) a seated position, it is more important than ever to counteract the damaging effects of constant sitting.  Did you know there are exercises you can do to offset damage caused by “the big sit”?  Or even what are the damaging effects of sitting?

At a minimum, we all need to develop and maintain core (trunk) strength – and by that I do not mean the sit-ups you did in high school!  We also need to improve our strength, stamina and balance to keep up with the demands of contemporary life, and especially to enjoy the activities we love most.

Arthritis or other limiting conditions?
Furthermore, if you’re living with a chronic condition like arthritis, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure or a history of cancer, you may have even more reasons to embrace – not avoid – exercise.  Increasing volumes of research conclude the right exercise programs for these and other conditions can – and do – improve quality of life as well as health outcomes.

Have you been hesitant to increase or change your exercise program because you’re concerned about whether your body can handle it?  A knowledgeable professional can help you get stronger, more flexible and more agile while keeping you safe. Many of my clients with these conditions report feeling much better equipped not only to handle, but to enjoy, their lives, after our work together.

"My road trip last summer was completely different than it would have been if I had not gotten Susan’s help.  My knees handled the hiking and allowed me to explore beautiful country out West on a once-in-a-lifetime journey with my sisters."
